Aimee Song Is Doing Relationship Milestones Differently

After a decade together, the content creator and her fiancé Jacopo Moschin are taking the next step on their own terms.

Every couple has a secret, but content creator Aimee Song and her soon-to-be husband Jacopo Moschin have an especially surprising one: their engagement video. In the era of the viral proposal, a moment driven largely by the influencers of this day and age, the live footage of Jacopo’s knee-drop—which unfolded on a Paris balcony—is “for internal use only,” he tells Brides. Instead, that proposal content is now a family keepsake (which is why the duo says you should always record the moment, even if you have no intention of posting it). “It’s so sweet to look back at it,” says Aimee. “One day we can show it to our kids.”

Deciding against sharing this major milestone with all 7.3 million of her Instagram followers might seem like a paradox given Aimee’s line of work, but the couple is full of these little contradictions. She’s always in front of the camera, while Jacopo, a photographer, is usually behind it; she’s from Los Angeles, and he’s from Italy; and she never envisioned an engagement (but always wanted to be a mom), while he was more open to traditional marriage. Their relationship’s trajectory has followed suit: Aimee and Jacopo welcomed their son, Teo, a year and eight months before getting engaged after being together for a decade. Now, they’re expecting their second child, due this summer, who will arrive before they tie the knot.

Aimee always knew she’d do relationship milestones differently. She recalls childhood friends with wedding-themed scrapbooks and Pinterest boards filled with white gowns, things she simply couldn’t fathom. Truthfully, she says, she’s just coming around to the idea: “Now that I’m engaged, I’m starting to think about the wedding, but I never did growing up,” she affirms. “I don’t know if it’s because I am a product of a divorced family, but I just never envisioned myself getting married. Even as an adult, I never understood doing something for a man or for a husband. That part hasn’t really changed. I feel like I’m really, truly who I am.”

Now, on the other side of the proposal, Aimee has a different point of view: “When it comes to the engagement or wedding, there is something that shifts,” Aimee says. “On a deep level, there are more important things in life than a ring or having a wedding or being married. But maybe because it’s such a traditional thing, it feels official and real. There’s something very romantic about it and the way it happened.”

Jacopo considers himself an anti-conformist, too, acknowledging that a lifelong partner does not have to be a spouse. “I respect couples that have been together for 30 years, and never decide to get engaged or get married. Love has so many shapes and forms and we should not be obligated to follow the same path,” he says. But when he pictured his and Aimee’s future, he also saw the value in a more traditional union, and thought that a proposal would mean something to his now-fiancée. “We have a child together, we've been together for enough years, we know we love each other, we know we want to be together,” Jacopo adds. “It just seemed like a very natural step forward.”

The fact that two self-proclaimed relationship renegades ended up with the most idyllic, classic proposal imaginable—in front of the Eiffel Tower, no less—is yet another delightful twist in their story. Jacopo always knew he’d propose in Paris, their meet-up city of choice when they did long distance. “It’s been a cornerstone of our relationship,” he explains. Wanting something private, he selected a quiet balcony in The Hotel Plaza Athénée for the moment. “We’ve been there multiple times together. It’s very traditional and part of our history,” he says. It also boasts a backdrop he knew would bring Aimee joy. “We always stay there and then do a couples video with the Eiffel Tower sparkling,” she says. “Jacopo thinks it's cheesy, but I like to do it because it's so cute, and you're only young once, you know? Also, I'm an influencer. I like to document everything.”

Jacopo came prepared with a Tiffany & Co. engagement ring (“It’s the peak of the most iconic and traditional way of proposing,” he says), blue box and all. He picked out Aimee’s diamond himself, knowing that their shared connection to the brand (they once worked on a brand campaign together) also made it that much more meaningful. “The way I envisioned it, it is a gesture that I could make,” Jacopo says, noting that the ring and the proposal was a surprise to Aimee (no modern, collaborative proposal for these two). “It wouldn’t have worked if I had to plan with her. It wouldn’t be the same thing. I had to find something that made sense for the both of us.”

Looking back, the only hint that a proposal was coming was that Jacopo was unusually willing to participate in that couples video. Aimee, however, maintains that she wasn’t suspicious. When he helped her set up the tripod with her phone, adding his own to make sure they got the shot, she just assumed he had finally leaned into his role as an Instagram husband—but he had actual husband in mind. “We did our video and then he got down on his knees and proposed. I was really shocked,” she says. That night, they celebrated their engagement with a multi-course meal downstairs. “It was like a three- or four-hour dinner, and literally every moment we were just giggling and soaking it in,” Aimee shares.

That the proposal unfolded where it did—abroad and in a hotel—was fitting, given their origin story. The pair met in a hotel lobby in Morocco, where Jacopo offered to help Aimee and a friend barter for goods at a local market (he was the only one who spoke French); the following day, they found themselves alone on an ATV excursion (her friend and his love interest drank some bad orange juice). “I promise I didn't poison them,” Aimee jokes.

Aimee felt drawn to Jacopo almost immediately, but she was based in Los Angeles and dating someone at the time, while Jacopo lived all the way across the country in New York. “When I saw Jacopo, I felt like something would happen. I didn’t let it happen, obviously, because I was in a relationship, but I felt this connection and attraction towards him. And Jacopo knew, too,” she says. He did, he confirms, and he has an inkling as to why: “Coming from two very different backgrounds, there was an attraction there—me coming from Europe and Aimee being such an L.A. girl. There was a lot of curiosity, I think, for both of us.” It was yet another study in contrast for the eventual couple, whose summer romance officially started in the Italian Riviera a few months later.

Aimee and Jacopo have now been together for over a decade—and while their engagement certainly is a touchpoint of their partnership, it was the birth of their son, Teo, that forever altered them as a couple. “I think I speak for both of us when I say you grow so much as a person,” Jacopo says. “You mature, you become more responsible, but also more caring and more patient. You have an understanding of the world, that it’s bigger than before, and you have a lot more empathy. Having a kid makes you a more grounded, sophisticated, loving person. That's the biggest change for me. And of course, I have lots of love for Aimee, too, for bringing him into this world, for carrying him for nine months. This is an incredible achievement when you look at it from the outside.” As for Aimee’s point of view? “Jacopo became like 10 times more attractive,” she says with a laugh. Her second pregnancy, she says, is only bringing them closer: “It’s very exciting. Our family is growing tighter and becoming whole.”

To focus on their little one’s arrival, Aimee and Jacopo are pressing pause on their wedding plans for now. “Initially we wanted to get married by the end of this year, but now that we have a new baby coming, we’ve decided to postpone,” she says. “I like the idea of having our kids be part of the wedding.” Whenever it happens, family will be at the heart of it all. “[Including our kids] will make it even more special. Honestly, Jacopo and I have so many beautiful memories before kids already, as we’ve been together for a bit, so to be able to create really beautiful, special memories with [them] makes me excited,” she adds.

This means that Aimee won’t be marking this occasion while pregnant, but she thinks “it’s so beautiful” when women do. (Her best advice for expecting brides? Show off the bump. “A woman’s body is so beautiful with its curves, especially when creating life,” she says.) Instead, she will spend the next few months thinking about her big-day fashion. Though Aimee never envisioned a wedding, she has a very clear bridal designer shortlist, a mix of both iconic bridal ateliers (like Oscar de la Renta) and those completely outside of the wedding space, including Pierpaolo Piccioli, who was until recently at the helm at Valentino, and Sabato de Sarno, the new Gucci creative director. As for what her dream wedding dress looks like? While she knows she wants to wear a white gown, the vision is still a work in progress.

It may be early days, but the pair does have a few specific wedding non-negotiables, including a customized soundtrack and a venue that’s charming and unique to them. They haven’t nailed down a location, but their first choice is Italy, where their romance truly kicked off. Their main goal, which is for everyone to have a great time, will guide every decision, they say. “I want everyone to just have fun,” Aimee says. “I want whoever comes—and even for us—to really be like, oh my god, that was so much fun.” Jacopo agrees, noting that his priorities are to “have a great party, great food, celebrate together, take great photos, and remember it for the future.” He pictures a “big event with all of our friends and family and just people who want to hang out with us and love us and want to have fun with us and have a great day,” he says. “That’s what we’re trying to plan—not as traditional. I wouldn’t mind a religious ceremony, but it’s not a requirement at all.”

It isn’t a requirement for Aimee, either. Though her opinions on weddings have shifted post-engagement, she still believes that a legal affair is optional. When asked if she thought an engagement could replace a wedding as the final milestone in her—or anyone’s—relationship journey, she said, “I’m open to both. [A wedding] is just something I never thought about until I got engaged, and now [it] has a bit of a different meaning to me. Jacopo and I have been together for almost 10 years, so I think, for us, a wedding or some kind of celebration of our love will definitely be in the cards.”

Thanks to their line of work, Aimee and Jacopo know what makes for a great celebration—and it’s not just about making the cut for Instagram. “We've been to the fanciest, most extravagant parties and weddings,” Aimee says. “My favorite weddings may not be the most photographic, beautiful, or extravagant. [They're the ones where] you just had so much fun partying 'til 3 a.m. with your heels off and you lose your voice.”
