While nail art and vibrant colors can be fun for the right bride, there's one nail polish shade that's a classic choice for any wedding—that being, a neutral hue. Like little black dresses and red convertibles, a neutral nail is an aesthetic that will never go out of style. Best of all? A subdued, natural manicure won't outshine your other beauty looks, or, worse, clash with your overall day-of fashions. Simply put, a neutral nail polish matches anything and everything, and is the perfect choice for those who want to keep their nails pared back.

That said, since neutral is as vast as any color on the spectrum, nailing down the perfect light pink, tan, or off-white isn’t an easy task. So, to help you find the most flattering neutral nail polish for your big day, we asked an expert for tips on how to narrow down this popular bridal beauty aesthetic. Plus, we share a few colors all brides should consider when planning their special wedding day manicures. Read on for more.

How to Choose a Flattering Neutral Nail Polish

Before you begin the journey of finding the perfect nude nail polish for your wedding day, it's important to note that "neutral" isn't the same for everyone. The shade you choose will depend on several factors, including your skin tone, wedding color scheme, and wedding dress, all of which we highlight below.

Based on Skin Tone

For starters, what looks effortless on fair skin will look stark and out of place on dark skin tones. Similarly, if you have cool undertones, a warm neutral tan might not look as seamless as a sheer pink. So when searching for flattering nude nail polish, try to match color temperatures, and never stray more than two or three shades lighter or darker than your skin.

More specifically, for fair-skinned brides, Rachel Apfel Glass, founder of Glosslab, recommends light pink, since fair skin tends to skew a bit pink on its own. For example, a classic, whispery pink, like Essie in Ballet Slippers, is sheer enough that it will almost look like bare nails (but cleaner and shinier). OPI in Bubble Bath is another classic choice, but with a bit more opaqueness if you want less of your natural nail showing through.

As for darker skin tones, Glass recommends looking at warmer beiges and nudes, like Deborah Lippman Gel Lab Pro Color in Naked or Chanel Le Vernis Longwear Nail Color in Legende. Pink also works if you want your neutral a little sweeter, but be sure to look for a sheer pink or terracotta with warm undertones like Glosslab polish in OG Sheer Blush.

Based on Your Wedding Color Scheme

Your wedding color scheme can also play a part in your neutral nail polish selection. If you’re keeping your flowers classic and simple (blacks, whites, tans, and lots of greenery), a sheer or milky white polish will give you that same sophisticated feel. (We like Cirque Colors in Linen and ORLY Breathable Treatment and Color in Barely There.) Assuming your dress is also white, a crisp, opaque white—like Dior Vernis Nail Polish in Jasmin—can act as a neutral, to boot.

If you have a more colorful fête planned—with loads of pink, purple, and orange flowers—a light pink will suit the playful mood. Hermes Nail Polish in Rose Porcelaine is the exact whispery shade of a peony, while Manicurist Paris Green Natural Nail Polish in Carnation is a sweet rose color with a subtle pearlescence (for just a little something extra).

Based on Your Wedding Dress

This should come as no surprise, but your wedding dress is another big part of your day-of vibe. Therefore, your nails should feel like a seamless part of your bridal fashion. For instance, a satin slip dress demands a clean, glossy neutral (matte would look out of place) like Jinsoon in Demure or Sally Hansen in Coconut Milk. Glitzier brides covered in sequins or beading, on the other hand, should opt for a neutral with a subtle shimmer—like Londontown Lakur in Pearl or ILNP Nail Polish in Birthday Suit—that will blend seamlessly with their looks while still giving a little wink upon further inspection.

Additional Tips for a Neutral Nail Look

Glass particularly likes neutral manicures on shorter lengths—though you should always stick with what feels like you. Clean, healthy hands are also a must for neutral manicures since you want the whole look to be polished and seamless. Therefore, consider an exfoliator, like L’Occitane One Minute Hand Scrub, which will condition and slough away dry skin. What's more, as soon as you wake up on the morning of your wedding, drop a little cuticle oil onto each nail and massage it in. It will keep things looking soft and hydrated in photos.

Whichever hue you land on, however, think ahead. “Just like your makeup and hair trial, do a manicure and pedicure trial to make sure you are picking the perfect color," says Glass. You’ll also want your official wedding manicure to happen at least the day before (if not two days before) so you’re not scrambling to dry your nails the morning of. “Keeping it simple is the best tip," Glass adds.
