Congratulations, you're engaged—and you can now revel in the joy, love, and excitement that comes with being a fiancé. But if you and your partner have privately spent time celebrating this major relationship milestone—and are ready to take the next step in your engagement journey—you may want to consider letting the outside world know that you're gearing up to tie the knot. The single best way to do this? Posting the news on social media.

Before heading to TikTok, Instagram, or X (formerly Twitter) to share your news, however, there are a few things you'll want to keep in mind before drafting a post for your feed. Chief among them is that you're not required to broadcast your news online if you'd prefer to keep everything private. "We don't have to spill all the tea about our personal lives," shares etiquette expert Elaine Swann."It’s alright to keep some things to yourself and only share one portion of it. Social media should not dictate that we share all aspects of our lives. It’s certainly acceptable to reserve details and live privately."

But if you do want to share this news with the world, we asked Swann to provide the best tips for navigating a social media engagement announcement with finesse and grace. Here's all the advice you need to know.

Elaine Swann is an etiquette expert and the founder of The Swann School of Protocol. She has been featured on the Today Show, The New York Times, The Washington Post, and more.

The Right Time to Announce Your Engagement on Social Media

Though may feel obligated to immediately let the world know about the big events in your life, don't let societal pressures force you to post about your engagement before you're ready. In fact, it's recommended that you don’t get Insta-happy too quickly. As much as you might be dying to post that sparkly new rock to your grid, Swann says you must resist the urge until you've told the closest members of your inner circle. Family members who might not be on social media, like parents and grandparents, should get a phone call, or even better, a video call if an in-person visit is not possible. Your siblings and best friends deserve a one-on-one announcement, as well.

"If they would be highly offended that they had to find out on social media," you should tell them first, Swann advises. Then, and only then, is it the right time to tell the rest of the world your happy news. This could be a day later, a week later, or even months later—that timeline is up to you and when you feel ready to share publicly.

How to Plan the Ultimate Social Media Engagement Announcement

Planning the ultimate engagement announcement for social media won't be the same for everyone. Some couples may want to show their smiling faces, while others might be a bit more camera-shy and just post a photo of the ring. But if you're searching for a way to make a statement with your social media post, consider organizing an engagement shoot and posting those photos for your public reveal.

"I think an engagement shoot is a nice way to make your announcement in a formal manner that is controlled and sets the tone of your wedding," Swann shares. You can go all out with a professional shoot or just grab a friend with a nice camera (or even a new iPhone model) and head to a meaningful location to snap your pics. You can also take this opportunity to set the tone for your wedding, as Swann suggests, by styling the shoot in the same color scheme or general vibe that you'd like your wedding to have.

Best of all? Planning an engagement photo shoot for your social media announcement will allow you to have stunning images you can look back on for years to come. Not to mention, they allow you to take your time and curate the perfect post, rather than feeling pressured to rush into writing something for social media to announce your special news. "Couples can take their time," explains Swann. "Often, within moments [of an event], we’re posting online and sharing. Put time and space in between and set up an engagement shoot; it sets a nice welcoming, organized tone."

If you don't like the idea of posting engagement photos, that's okay! Do what feels best for you and your partner, and dream up another unique way to announce your news. For instance, you could post a photo of your first date or an image of a quote that expresses the love you have for your fiancé.

What to Avoid When Crafting a Social Media Engagement Announcement

According to Swann, here are some major no's when it comes to putting together your announcement post:

  • Steer clear of referencing past relationships. Do not use your engagement announcement as an opportunity to dig at any exes or "haters."
  • Avoid making any promises in your caption. Steer clear of telling everyone they are invited to the wedding or tagging certain friends and saying "Get ready to be bridesmaids." This is not the time to establish your wedding party, Swann says.
  • Do not ask for money. "There is this horrid trend that is beginning to gather steam of folks asking for money to help fund their wedding, and it is tacky, inappropriate, and unacceptable," Swann shares.
  • Avoid using a wedding hashtag. Not only can using a hashtag too soon get muddied by other people using it for different purposes, but it can also result in getting spammed by wedding vendors. If and when you do choose to pick a hashtag, Swann says, make sure it does not have a mocking or sarcastic tone. It should be positive and happy.
