Nowadays, engaged couples often curate a list of shoppable items to guide their guests’ wedding gift purchases, but every now and then, an attendee will give the newlyweds an off-registry present. In a viral Reddit post from April 24, 2024, couples reflected on the “weirdest or craziest things” that they received on their big day. The post also included unforgettable items from former guests that a friend or family member received and gag gifts that they themselves gifted a couple.

In the post, which garnered nearly 800 comments, one woman said she received a homemade “how-to sex tape” from her mother-in-law—who narrated the tape. The Reddit user’s disclosure received 1,700 upvotes and 56 comments, with many asking for more information.

Another Redditor explained that not only did she and her husband receive a low-cost item, but also the guest addressed it to the wrong person. The gift was “a dollar story plastic pitcher with $5 in it with a card that had my husband’s and his first wife’s name on it.”

One person recalled a homemade present made out of household items, which they saw in a more positive light once they discovered the gift-giver. “My ex and I received a decorative wall fan made out of plastic forks, lace, ribbons, and ribbon roses,” the Redditor expressed. “I would have thought it was a joke but it was from a sweet little old lady in his hometown church. It was gloriously tacky.”

Many detailed everyday items that didn’t fit the formality of the occasion. “My daughter's cousin sent her 3 bars of soap,” someone said. “Not even fancy soap. It was Dove soap. Lol. I think that's pretty weird.” Meanwhile, an additional comment described a relative’s cuisine-focused present: “My cousin was gifted cheese slices and boxes of cereal. It was a fancy wedding and I was baffled.”

Another Reddit user recounted a deceptive gift that was initially disappointing—but turned out to be extremely generous. “My best friend gave us a salad spinner,” the Redditor began. “I hate to sound entitled, because I truly am not like that, but…not gonna lie, I was a little surprised and disappointed. A $15.00 salad spinner. I stuck it in the back of the closet and promptly forgot about it.” Years later, she decided to give the appliance a try. “IT WAS STUFFED WITH CASH!!!! I called my friend immediately, laughing hysterically,” the Redditor reflected.

Someone else reminisced on the time they attended each of their cousin’s four weddings, and for each affair, their gift stuck to the same theme. “The first 3 times were to the same woman,” the Redditor explained. “For their first wedding I got them a hot dog toaster. For the 2nd wedding, I got them another hot dog toaster. Mostly because I thought that would be hilarious. After 1 kid, a vasectomy, a vasectomy reversal, adopting a kid and one more vasectomy… they got remarried. #3 wedding I got them a hot dog toaster…On the 4th wedding, his bride from overseas told me how much the kids loved the hot dog toaster and she hoped they get another one so each kid can have their own. I got them another hot dog toaster.”
