When Shannon Heckman’s Pennsylvania home burned to the ground in 2022, virtually all of her most prized possessions were destroyed—including the treasured Pronovias wedding dress she wore to marry her husband, Zach, in a sunflower field in the ‘90s. “Losing my wedding dress in our house fire was heartbreaking. I had always dreamed of sharing my dress with one of my daughters,” the mom told Brides exclusively, noting that she had fallen in love with the gown that fit her “fairy glen” vision decades prior. “Now, I was left only with the charred, melted remains. Although the dress was ruined, I could not bring myself to throw it away.” She racked her brain for ways to bring the garment back to life, and ultimately decided to reach out to Pronovias for help.
The team at the Barcelona-based fashion house was immediately touched by her heartfelt request. “Shannon actually reached out directly to us via email sharing her story, inquiring if it was possible [to restore the gown],” noted a representative from the brand. They decided to take the project on in secret, with the hopes of surprising their former bride with a near-exact replica down the road. “Because this was such a special moment, we didn't want to confirm with Shannon that it was possible. We felt that this truly could be such an amazing surprise to give to one of our former brides who loves the brand.”

Recreating Shannon’s wedding dress was no small feat; the brand notes that it was a “professional and emotional challenge” since they were meticulous about creating a new gown that was true to the original. This required them to “go back in time to the late ‘90s,” the rep shared. “We had all the documentation saved on paper and were able to find the [order form] filled out by hand, where all the dress' technical information was listed.”
They knew what the gown looked like—the A-line gown featured flowing sleeves and a ring of flowers around the bodice—but the real hardship was finding the correct fabric. “The challenge was to find in our fabric suppliers the raw materials that most closely resembled those of that era,” explained the Pronovias team. “Since today's techniques have changed, dresses are constructed with lighter materials. Retrieving the silhouette’s original pattern was also tough: “Thirty years ago, patterns were made on cardboard, by hand. Logistically, it is impossible to keep the patterns from all the collections, so we had to turn to our technical team,” the rep added. “Fortunately, we still have staff in the Atelier who worked on those collections and have been able to reproduce the same dress.”
The Atelier team at Pronovias’ project was successful. They managed to sew a nearly perfect replica, with just one subtle variation. “The only detail that is not 100 percent identical is the flowers on the bodice. These flowers, trendy in the ‘90s, are no longer being made,” said the rep. “Luckily, the supplier that originally provided the flowers for the dress still works with Pronovias and was able to recreate the flower style and exclusively manufacture a sample for this dress.”

The Pronovias team said that recreating a former bride’s wedding dress in the wake of tragedy was “incredibly emotional and rewarding.” “The opportunity to restore such a precious piece of her family's history and give back an integral part of their love story is really moving,” the team shared. “This experience reminds us of the deep emotional connection people have with such significant pieces such as their wedding dress and reinforces our commitment to making dreams a reality, even in the face of adversity. It's a powerful testament to the kindness, craftsmanship, and the resilience of the human spirit. We are so honored to have been able to be a part of such an incredible story.”
As for how Shannon feels about having her wedding dress back? “It’s a pretty unbelievable surprise,” she tells us. “With this gift, I am able to share this cherished garment with my daughters as I’ve always dreamed, and I can keep my dress as a talisman, and preserve this precious piece of our history,” she said. “I can hold my wedding dress in my hands, this tangible representation of the beginning of our love story, which has evolved to be the most extraordinary part of my life.”
