Do you know your “big three?” While most of us are familiar with our zodiac sun sign, the other two signs—your moon sign and rising sign—are less well-known. However, when taken as a whole, these placements can unlock important truths about your personality, mood, and potential reactions, all of which are essential to know when you’re planning a wedding. Your moon sign, in particular, may be worth diving into as this is what impacts emotions and relationships.

First and foremost, what is a moon sign? A moon sign is the astrological sign the moon was in at the time and place you were born; in order to determine yours, you must know those two details. “Your moon sign can give insight into your emotional drives and expression, your needs in relationships, and what qualities help you feel safe and nurtured,” explains Nicole Goicuria, astrologer and founder of the Astral Botanica. “Your moon sign can flavor your personality by informing you of your comfort level in certain situations, and what you need to feel emotionally fulfilled and stable during times of major transitions, such as a wedding.” Finding your moon sign is simple—assuming you have access to those few details, that is. Many astrology websites have tools to calculate your big three (Goicuria’s pick is astro.com.)

  • KJ Atlas is a Los Angeles-based astrologer who studies at the Portland School of Astrology.
  • Nicole Goicuria is a practicing therapist, astrologer, and founder of The Astral Botanica.

Knowing your moon sign can help you better understand yourself, and it can also help you navigate the wedding-planning process as a whole. “It may help to know your moon sign so you can potentially plan for what size gathering you are most comfortable with and what kind of support you may need day of,” says Goicuria. “During the planning phase, it may help to work with your moon sign to make sure you’re making decisions that are in alignment with your authentic needs as well as your partner’s needs and the relationship as a whole, since there is a whole life to be spent together after this one very special day.”

Astrologer KJ Atlas agrees. “Since the moon is arguably the most intimate part of one's chart, the moon sign shows up in relationships, especially romantic relationships. Weddings are highly personal, so the moon sign energy of the individual should appear in every aspect of the wedding and relationship for a successful marriage and a fun, satisfying wedding,” she says. “Weddings are also emotional and stressful for some people, as the process of planning one can take a long time and pull on heartstrings. If you want an easier approach to planning a wedding, look to your moon sign for the roadmap to success.”

Fire: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius

Watch out for impulsive decisions, advises Goicuria, as fire moons tend to leap before they look. “Be sure to have a sample or experience the things you are committing to and stick to a realistic budget,” she says; don’t just hire your friend’s DJ friend before getting a taste of their spinning skills. Lean into your innate creativity to create a one-of-a-kind experience.

Aries

Atlas describes Aries moons as “quick, decisive, and enthusiastic,” which makes them great planners. Just beware of going over-budget or turning into a bridezilla (or groomzilla) during stressful situations, and remember that good things take time.

Leo

Leo moons are ready to be the “star of their day,” says Atlas, so get ready for an over-the-top celebration. “It will be the event of the year and everyone will enjoy the show, having a fabulous time they will talk about for years.” Atlas warns that this can lead to “overload,” and that the wedding isn’t a performance—it’s a commitment.

Sagittarius

“Sag moons bring the party and sometimes take the party to exotic locations,” says Atlas. Sagittarius moons will create an extravagant, unforgettable event, but Atlas cautions that they may also overlook important details and tend to be hard-headed.

Earth: Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn

Earth moons are perfectionists with luxurious tastes, which means setting a budget is key. “It may be best to stay grounded by collaborating with your partner on a shared vision that doesn’t get swept up in the fantasy of the perfect wedding or feel pressured to adhere to tradition or family and societal expectations,” says Goicuria.

Taurus

Taureans like nice things, but they also know how to “make things beautiful on a budget,” says Atlas. Resist the urge to be as stubborn as the titular bull and let others help when necessary.

Virgo

Though Virgo moons have a meticulous, perfectionist nature, Atlas advises they also relax their tight hold on the reins during planning so that perfectionism doesn’t lead to paralysis. “Virgo moons are wedding planning queens with binders for days to help them keep everything organized in meticulous detail. Their wedding will be elegant and classic with minimalist flair,” she says. “They need to avoid micromanaging. Virgo moons should prioritize the things most important to them and leave room for a bit of messiness—it adds character!”

Capricorn

Capricorn moons are very “by the book” when it comes to planning, says Atlas, and may need to be reminded to loosen up. “Capricorn moons need to frequently re-center the purpose of the event rather than focus on how people will perceive them. They might need to be reminded to try something new to bring in a more lighthearted vibe,” she shares. “Remember, weddings are intimate and emotional events!”

Air: Gemini, Libra, Aquarius

Your curious nature is a major strength for wedding planning. “Air moons love doing lots of research and with this moon placement you can get great deals and find the best little, unknown artisanal bakery that no one ever heard of for the perfect cake,” says Goicuria. Just remember that not everyone you’ve ever met needs an invite to the celebration, even if you’re saving cash on food and flowers. “Air moons may have to pare down the guest list, as this moon placement is very social and the guest list may swell beyond capacity in the blink of an eye if you’re not careful.”

Gemini

Super-social Geminis will have tons of friends on hand to help with the process and are great at incorporating thoughtful, personal touches into their big day. “However, they can get distracted from the main goal and forget important things in favor of hyper-fixating on small, negligible details,” says Atlas. A to-do list (or three!) may help them stay on schedule.

Libra

“Libra moons have a knack for beauty and social graces, so a Libra moon wedding will make everyone in attendance feel seen,” shares Atlas. “However, Libra needs to remember that this is their day, not everyone else's.” A vision board may help Libras decide what they want from their wedding before allowing others to share opinions.

Aquarius

Aquarius moons like to do things differently and bring “an unconventional and fresh approach” to wedding planning, says Atlas. They’re all about new, modern ideas versus traditional rituals. “However, don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater, Aquarius,” Atlas advises. “They don’t have to be rebellious just for the sake of it. Pick the things that really matter to them.”

Water: Pisces, Cancer, Scorpio

Water moons can be emotional and get overwhelmed throughout the wedding planning journey. “Be sure to have your friends on hand for support during the stressful times. Using strong boundaries with parents or family members that are especially activating may also help,” advises Goicuria. “Water is a sentimental element that can help bring a genuine tear-jerking quality to everything from your vows to the music to the menu.”

Pisces

Dreamy, romantic Pisces moons can easily be swept away by the romance of a wedding, so find a friend, partner, or wedding planner to stay on track. “Pisces moons can get lost in emotion and fantasy, so having a wedding-planning counterpart can take the stress off their plate and prevent a spiral,” Atlas advises. “They must stay grounded in what they want and resist changing their mind too much.”

Cancer

Family-oriented Cancer moons will bring a “sentimental and nostalgic vibe” to their wedding, says Atlas. “Their process might involve asking others in their family to support and provide insight or donate/lend items to make their day special.” However, they may also do too much and lose themselves in the planning process and trying to please everyone. “Cancer moons don’t have to do it alone!”

Scorpio

Though Scorpio moons bring “intention and passion” to the wedding planning process, they may also need to let go of control a bit. “Not everything needs to have a personal touch in order to make the day great,” says Atlas.
