Couple Disinvited Relative From Destination Wedding After She Was Already There—Now She's Demanding Reimbursement for All Travel Expenses

The bride and groom decided to remove her from the guest list after she caused drama the night before, at the rehearsal dinner.

In most situations, the couple getting married has authority over their guest list, so if someone is treating them unfairly, even cruelly, they have the ability to disinvite them. One duo, a 33-year-old female and 35-year-old male, felt that disinviting one of their distant relatives from their destination wedding was justified after the woman started drama at their rehearsal dinner. But, since the guest already traveled to the locale and booked her accommodations, she demanded to be reimbursed for these expenses.

According to the bride’s post on Reddit’s “Am I the A------" on November 14, 2024, the bride and groom held a rehearsal dinner the night before their big day. At the event, the bride’s future sister-in-law (the groom’s brother’s wife) was dampening the mood. The bride recalled that she was “talking s---“ about her fiancé, saying “really inappropriate things.” While the Redditor didn’t get into any specifics, her future sister-in-law’s comments were noticeable and disruptive enough that the bride’s friends asked her about the commotion.

Even though the bride’s future sister-in-law was making a scene, her mom deflected the blame. “After sister-in-law caused all this drama, her mother had the nerve to come up to ME and tell ME that I need to stop causing all this drama,” the bride said, aghast. “She asks me why I hate her daughter—which I don’t—and then she looks me up and down, tells me that my outfit is cute, smiles and walks away.”

The bride’s future sister-in-law and her mom continued to make her pre-wedding event an uncomfortable one. “Later in the night I saw sister-in-law, mother, and mother’s date bickering together and then turning around and glaring at me,” she continued. Since the bride didn’t want to deal with all of the unnecessary drama, especially during her wedding weekend, she decided to make some last-minute adjustments to the guest list. “My husband texted his parents explaining what had happening and they told us we should uninvite both of them and that they’d back us up,” the bride revealed. “We ended up uninviting the mother and tried to keep the peace by letting sister-in-law keep her invite.”

The bride and groom went on to say “I do.” A few days after they returned from their honeymoon, the bride received an email from her sister-in-law’s mother, which contained an outrageous request: “reimburse her for all of her wedding expenses," per the post. She also used the message to curse out the bride, accusing her of being an “a------ for getting her uninvited from her destination wedding when she was already there.”

After the bride asked the internet whether they agree with the accusation, Reddit reassured her that she doesn’t owe her sister-in-law’s mom anything, given her unjust behavior. “She wouldn't have wasted her money if she hadn't been acting like a jerk,” a fellow Redditor said. “She should have behaved like she paid to be there.” Many emphasized that statement, concluding that her reaction doesn’t warrant any compensation. “Both women were being catty and jealous,” another Redditor said. “Don't tolerate people who upend your peace and joy to that level. Do not tolerate toxicity!”

Some pointed out that the woman was lucky to have even made the guest list at all. “How did your brother-in-law's mother-in-law and her boyfriend even end up on the guest list at your destination wedding in the first place?” someone asked. The original poster responded to that question, explaining that her "manipulative" sister-in-law convinced her husband’s parents to invite her whole family—and even though they extended the invite to the woman and her husband, she brought a plus-one: her coworker. The bride also added that the day after her wedding, she blocked all of them on social media.
